Automated, low-temperature viscosity measurement of lubricants

Dec 12 2022

Anton Paar’s ViscoQC 300 rotational viscometer, when combined with the powerful PTD 175 Peltier sample temperature control device, complies with the most important international standards for performing low-temperature viscosity measurements of lubricants (ie: ASTM D2983/D8210/D5133/D7110, DIN 51398). The air counter-cooled device works with a temperature range of -45 °C to +175 °C with no circulator bath needed, thus reducing maintenance work and operational costs. This device also improves operator safety as no hazardous cooling liquids, such as methanol, are used.

When operating within ASTM D2983 and D8210 criteria, end-users can carry out automated, low-temperature viscosity tests for ATF, hydraulic fluids, and gear oils down to -40 °C. With the ASTM D5133 and D7110 methods, one can run temperature scans automatically to measure the apparent viscosity of fresh, sooty, or highly oxidised engine oils at low temperatures and generate the critical gelation index to foresee any low-temperature pumpability problems that may result in engine failure.

Automation not only lowers hands-on time necessary to prepare and perform a viscosity test, it also improves precision. By integrating all components of the conditioning and testing processes within a self-contained unit, temperature fluctuation and result variability associated with sample transfer and disruption is no longer a problem. This user-friendly system is simple to operate via its7-inch touchscreen, no PC is needed.

Anton Paar have added several unique features to make measurements easier and more precise and prevent user errors. Toolmaster™ recognises the attached spindle type automatically. Magnetic coupling enables simply and smooth attachment or removal of the spindle. Integrated digital levelling and constant monitoring of correct levelling status guarantee repeatable results and T-Ready™ informs the operator when the sample has reached its desired temperature.
