Dry Filterability of Lubricants

A new ASTM International standard will provide a standard test method for dry filterability of lubricants and hydraulic fluids by mass flow technique. This standard (D8385), along with its companion on wet filterability (D8277), were developed by ASTM’s committee on petroleum products, liquid fuels, and lubricants (D02).
Hydraulic fluid power is used in a wide range of industries including transportation, construction, mining, agriculture, metals, and manufacturing. The requirements of hydraulic fluids are unique. This test method differs from existing standards because the user assesses filterability based on mass flow rates, which lends itself to automation and is less vulnerable to error.
According to ASTM International member Paul Michael, an easier path to clean fluids will make for longer-lasting hydraulics.
“Fluids with good filterability not only sustain their cleanliness longer, they enhance the sustainability of hydraulic equipment by preventing machine malfunction,” says Michael. “This standard is useful to manufacturers of hydraulic fluids and power equipment, as well as fluid users in industries like construction, agriculture, mining and manufacturing.”
