Gas Detection

New refrigerant detector launched at Achema.

May 17 2018

Gas detection specialists, Bieler+Lang, recently launched its new IR 220 gas detector at the ACHEMA trade fair. The measuring device developed by the company from southern Germany offers sound protection for people, the environment and material assets.

The IR 220 refrigerant gas detector comes into use, where refrigerants might leak. Many synthetic cooling agents are dangerous to people or nature - a large proportion of these are toxic, climate damaging or even explosive.

This newly developed measuring device features an especially long-lasting sensor as well as high precision and repeatability. The IR 220 is resistant to chemical toxins. The measuring signal is barely affected by humidity and temperature.

This gas detector not only detects refrigerant leakages reliably, it will alert the operator of leaks in good time. This is important, because the refrigerant emissions is a hazard that can be made manageable by the use of intelligent gas measuring and detection systems. With the monitoring of cooling agents by gas detection equipment, a main advantage is the prolonging of inspection intervals of the various cooling devices. Gas detection systems offer a reliable weapon in the battle to reduce time and cost-intensive leakage-checks.

The IR 220’s sensor uses the NDIR-technology (non-dispersive infrared) to monitor the presence of cooling agents. This technology is based on the premise that each gas possesses a unique and well-defined light absorption curve in the infrared spectrum, that can be used to identify the specific gas. The gas concentration can be analysed within the optical path. The sensor is equipped with electronics and software on its own, to provide a linearised and temperature-compensated output. This output signal is transformed to a 4-20 mA signal.

Bieler + Lang’s latest development determines refrigerant gases from 0 to 2000 ppm (parts per million). It can be used optionally as a stand-alone solution without further equipment.
