Sulphur Analysis
NEX CG II - Multi-element Versatility with Ultra-low Detection Limits
Aug 17 2021
The amount of sulphur concentration affects all levels of the petroleum industry — from the price of crude oil to blending and refining, pipelines, transportation, storage, product quality control at the refinery level, and as fuel at the pump.
The quality and grade of crude oil depend on sulphur content and the presence of nickel and vanadium, and in some cases, iron. Determining nickel and vanadium content is imperative for processing purposes and contract agreements. Knowledge of metal content is especially important in the quality of bunker fuels.
If organic chlorides in crudes go unnoticed, they can be detrimental to the refining process. Therefore, a fast, simple means of monitoring them at pipelines and refineries is crucial.
No matter what the application, Rigaku's new and highly versatile multi-element NEX CG II analyser offers fast, reliable measuring and monitoring of sulphur, chlorine, vanadium, iron, nickel, lead, manganese, and so much more. It provides non-destructive analysis of sodium to uranium in almost any matrix and is an ideal tool for measuring ultra-low and trace element concentrations up to percent levels.
Many technologies are available for measuring sulphur and other elements in petroleum products, but what makes NEX CG II unique is its advanced three-dimensional (3D) Cartesian Geometry optical kernel.
NEX CG II is an indirect excitation energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) system that uses secondary targets rather than tube filters. Monochromatic and polarised excitation from secondary targets in full 90° Cartesian Geometry eliminates background noise and delivers ultra-low detection limits — even with the most challenging sample types.
The Rigaku NEX CG II is a powerful, second-generation benchtop EDXRF offering exceptional versatility. It is well suited for ASTM and international compliance for ultra-low sulphur applications, such as testing ultra-low sulphur in diesel (ULSD) and meeting Tier 3 gasoline requirements per ASTM D7220. NEX CG II also delivers the lowest chlorine detection limits for ASTM D4929 compliance using Part C methodology and easily meets ASTM D5059 Parts A and C compliance using the Bi internal standard method to measure lead in gasoline samples.
NEX CG II is a multi-element, multi-purpose benchtop analyser that delivers rapid qualitative and quantitative elemental analyses and addresses the needs of many petroleum analysis applications. It serves many screening and monitoring requirements and offers compliance for multiple testing methods and standards.
