Improving Water Pollution Measurements

A new handheld device is set to change the way oil in water measurements are made. By giving instant results of ppm level oil in water pollution levels, operators can quickly and easily track the source of leaks or process problems without having to wait for results from the laboratory. This means actions can be taken immediately to minimise water pollution events at outlets and water courses. Measurements are no longer limited to one sample as the fibre coupled probe can quickly perform measurements on multiple samples enabling depth profiles and transects across water courses and discharge points for a more complete picture of water quality.

The new HD-1000 oil in water analyser is manufactured by Advanced Sensors, specialists in oil in water measurements. Paul Stockwell from their distributor in the UK, IMA Ltd (UK), says “This is a full fluorescence spectrometer in a very small package. It allows measurements to be time and date stamped, and the ability to monitor the complete spectra enables hydrocarbon liquids to be properly identified and ensures measurements are accurate”.

With wi-fi and Bluetooth access, data can be sent quickly to key decision makers. The handheld unit can also be used alongside on-line oil in water measurement systems to cross check calibration accuracy.
