Cone-Plate Measuring Systems: The Importance of the Gap

May 16 2023

Cone-plate measuring systems for rotational viscometers require very low sample volume from 0.5 mL to 2 mL, which also minimises the cleaning effort after the measurement is conducted.

These geometries are regarded as absolute measuring systems, meaning that viscosity results can be compared with those of other absolute systems, provided that the same parameters such as shear rate, measurement time, temperature etc. are retained.

Essential for each cone-plate system is the gap set between the cone (spindle) and the plate (cup). The gap has to be exactly the same (µm scale), otherwise the system can no longer be considered an absolute system – ultimately leading to invalid results.

Rotational viscometers operating with a cone-plate setup require a gap adjustment each time the measuring temperature or cone is changed.

Anton Paar’s PTD 100 Cone-Plate for the ViscoQC series constantly monitors the gap-setting to ensure measurements are always carried out with the correct set gap. With just the push of a button the gap can be adjusted automatically – a truly unique feature for this price class.

Further highlights are the rapid temperature control from 0°C to 100°C thanks to integrated Peltier technology and the modular accessory character of the PTD 100 Cone-Plate. It is installable or removable in less than a minute, expanding the testing capabilities of your standard ViscoQC rotational viscometer with minimal investment. Typical for Anton Paar, spindles with magnetic coupling and automatic spindle recognition (Toolmaster™) come as standard.
