Industrial Methane Measurement Conference

May 15 2019

Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas, trapping 84 times more heat than carbon dioxide during the first 20 years after it’s released. It makes up a significant percentage of the environmental pollution created by the oil and gas industry and pressure for action to prevent the worst effects of climate change is coming from government, which is trying to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuels. At the international level, countries have committed to emissions reduction targets as part of the 2015 Paris Agreement, while cities and businesses have made their own commitments. Furthermore, new EU regulations mandate that industrial emissions must be measured, reported and controlled.

Measurement and control of methane emissions is therefore a significant issue across industry and there is an increasing need to detect, monitor and address methane emissions from industries.

This year’s Industrial Methane Measurement Conference 2019, organised by the National Physical Laboratory (NPL), allows scientists, regulators and industries to join together and work towards a common goal of reducing methane emissions. Techniques to monitor methane are developing rapidly and it can be a challenge to keep pace with the available methods, their relative advantages and disadvantages, and the evolving regulatory landscape. At the conference, leading experts will discuss the latest field studies and policy developments, alongside showcasing cutting edge methods and novel technologies for monitoring methane emissions. This event will give attendees a comprehensive understanding of the issues surrounding measurement and control of methane emissions, by bringing together key stakeholders from across the sector, including industry, NGOs, government and academia.

As the UK’s National Measurement Institute, NPL is leading the development of the European standards for monitoring fugitive and diffuse emissions of methane and other volatile organic compounds (VOCs). NPL offers a holistic approach to tracking leaks from pipelines and plant, and can help reduce greenhouse gases, improve safety and even prevent explosions.

The Industrial Methane Measurement Conference (IMMC) 2019 is running alongside PEFTEC 2019, the conference and exhibition for professionals specialising in laboratory and process analysis within the petroleum, refining and environmental industries. Come and meet NPL experts at Stand 96.
