Reliable and Hassle Free Freeze/Cloud Point Process Analyser

Sep 20 2017

Freeze and cloud point are both important cold properties, which need to be monitored by refinery operators. As a matter of fact; the cloud point and freeze point can be detected with one analyser as the principle of detection is identical for both parameters. The difference between the two properties is defined by the actual sample behavior. A sample, such as gasoil, is cooled and, once it reaches a certain temperature, small crystals start to appear, which results in a certain level of cloudiness in the sample. At that point the ‘cloud point’ temperature is determined via reduction of light intensity through an optical path. The cooling process is stopped and the crystals dissolve again and at that point the sample becomes clear and transparent again. As soon as all crystals have dissolved the so called freeze point temperature has been reached.

These cold properties are also important for the aviation industry to ensure that jet fuels and other aviation gasolines avoid filter clogging or irregular combustion characteristics during the operation of turbines. The same applies also to mainly gasoils and diesel products.

Bartec Benke’s IECEx and CSA approved, FRP-4/CPA-4 offers ASTM compliant optical measurements of both parameters and usually there is no chiller required for cloud point applications. This analyser includes a rugged measurement cell, which is easily removed due to the unit’s optimised assembly. FRP-4/CPA-4 integrates failure diagnosis and self monitoring and creates validation reports for quality assurance purposes. Network and fieldbus communication interfaces are included: Modbus /RTU, Modbus/TCP (bidirectional). Remote access via Ethernet (VDSL or FOC is).
