Scientists have discovered a potential new way to reduce emissions and recycle motor oil into fuel.
At the 241st National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society, professor of biochemical engineering at the University of Cambridge Howard Chase unveiled the method.
Harnessing pyrolysis technology, the team discovered that some 90 per cent of waste motor oil can be recycled into fuel.
Currently, the eight billion gallons of waste oil produced each year can be disposed of in a variety of ways; however, many of these can harm the environment.
Dr Chase claims that this recycling method "provides a new use for a waste material that's too-often disposed of improperly, with harm to the environment. In addition, it provides a supplemental fuel source for an energy-hungry world".
The American Chemical Association is a non-profit organisation that forms one of the world's largest scientific groups - and publishes papers based on all areas of chemistry.
