Aberystwyth oil spill under investigation

Sep 05 2011

An investigation is continuing into an oil spill at Aberystwyth harbour.

According to the BBC, the red diesel got into the water through the town's surface water drains but despite causing an odour problem, it is not harmful to health.

Until the oil disperses, Ceredigion council has advised people not to swim or surf in the area.

Ged Davies, the man co-ordinating the Environment Agency's response to the spill, told the BBC that the organisation was finding it difficult to minimise the pollution caused as the amount is too small to remove but enough to create a strong odour.

"You don't lose this amount of oil and not know about it, and if anyone is aware of some mishap occurring in the town we'd like to hear from them," he added.

There is a possibility the agency will also use UV lights to trace the oil through the drains to identify its origins.

Meanwhile New York officials are still working to clean up a "major oil spill" in Schoharie County caused by Hurricane Irene.
