Mar 31 2015

Mike Squyres is an innovator and an entrepreneur in the field of hydrocarbon measurement. With nearly 30 years of experience in designing and developing measurement software applications, Mike is the President of Flow-Cal, Inc., the industry-leader in measurement data management for natural gas and petroleum liquids.

After graduating with a degree in Computer Science from the University of Houston, Mike began his career with Coastal Flow Measurement Companies in 1987. He started as a computer programmer where he developed an application for processing the company’s chart data, vastly improving both the efficiencies and accuracy. After quickly ascending to a Vice President position, his responsibilities highlighted the need for an industry-wide application to manage the enormous amount of data generated by flow computers - which were becoming increasingly popular. He introduced the first commercial FLOWCAL measurement application in 1995, bringing improved validation methods and automation to a once-manual process. Mike continues his commitment to pioneering better ways to validate, calculate, and report measurement data.

Mike currently sits on the American School of Gas Measurement Technology (ASGMT) board of directors, is a former General Chairman and also serves as an instructor. He has been published in numerous industry magazines having taught classes at the International School of Hydrocarbon Measurement, as well as many other industry-related schools and short courses worldwide. He is a member of the American Gas Association (AGA), Southern Gas Association (SGA), Canadian Gas Association (CGA), Gulf Coast Measurement Society and the Midwest Measurement Society. For his contributions to the industry, Mike was recognised by Houston’s Business Journal’s “Who’s Who in Energy” in 2013.

Mike is also an active and voting member of the American Petroleum Institute (API). Having agreed to join forces to develop and support their oil measurement standard’s equations, Flow-Cal is proud to be the sole developer and worldwide distributor of the API software equations.

Through the years, Mike and his company have mentored and provided internship and job opportunities for recently-graduated software engineers. Mike and Flow-Cal were recently presented with University of Houston – Clear Lake’s “Community Partner of the Year” award for 2015. In an effort to continue encouraging students in science and technology fields, Mike has donated time, manpower and fiscal assistance to University of Houston and University of Houston – Clear Lake.

Mike says his greatest accomplishment, however, is building Flow-Cal, Inc. The products, staff, structure and reputation have allowed the company to thrive and continue to grow in the ever-evolving climate of the oil and gas industry. Flow-Cal has been recognised by Inc. magazine’s prestigious “Inc. 5000” list of fastest-growing private companies in America, as well as multiple awards from Houston Business Journal’s “Fast 100”, and even more importantly, their coveted award for “Best Places to Work”.

Mike and his beloved wife of 25 years, Betty, live in Houston’s Clear Lake area. They have two college-aged children; Paige, about to graduate from The University of Texas and Logan, a freshman at Texas Tech University.
