Flow Meter for Severe Service & Custody Transfer on Oil & Gas

Apr 21 2015

Isaac Newton described his accomplishments as, “If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.”  The TORUSWEDGE from Bell Technologies improves upon several industry standard primary elements. Orifice plates, flow nozzles, wedge meters and venturis have all proven themselves over many decades to be outstanding flow meters. The TORUSWEDGE combines the best of these meters into one remarkable device.

Circumferential Ramps, In and Out
All differential pressure primary elements take advantage of unique restrictions within the flow stream. The TORUSWEDGE has circumferential ramps, which merge the flow stream through the vena contracta while concurrently conditioning the flow and providing an extremely durable wear surface. The circumferential ramps allow the TORUSWEDGE to be used in the harshest flow environments — from acid to drilling fluids, even bi-directionally. As an added benefit, permanent pressure loss is greatly reduced compared to other meters. Lastly, the unit’s unique ramp design causes it to be self-cleaning. As has been noted numerous times in the literature, process accumulation on a primary element typically leads to incorrect process measurement and potential financial loss.
10:1 Turndown
The TORUSWEDGE provides users with exceptional flexibility in process implementation due to its 10:1 turndown. With selected transmitters, 15:1 is possible.

Large or Small Scale
Since the principles of differential pressure measurement apply to nearly all pipe sizes, the TORUSWEDGE can be built to nearly any specification. Standard sizes range from 1/2-inch diameter through 60-inch diameter.

Advantages.
The TORUSWEDGE allows the user to measure abrasive processes more accurately than ever before. Drilling and fracturing fluids, which have heretofore caused most flow meters to fail prematurely, are now easily measurable. Given the significant cost of these fluids, accurate measurement is important.
With no sharp edges to wear, the TORUSWEDGE’s life cycle and inspection cycle are much longer than most competitors, leading to a lower cost of ownership. Inspection schedules can be greatly reduced, leading to a more efficient use of manpower.
Permanent pressure loss is a concern in any differential pressure primary device, but the TORUSWEDGE cuts the permanent loss in half versus an orifice plate. With less horsepower required to pump the process through the restriction, smaller and less expensive pumping equipment is required.

Tough Under Pressure
The unique design of the TORUSWEDGE allows the unit to operate in pressure environments of vacuum through 15,000 PSI, adding to the unit’s appeal in numerous markets. Additionally, the unit cannot bend, bow or warp, even in an over-pressurized condition. This is an important point since modification of a primary device’s geometry can lead to process miss-measurement.

How accurate is it?
With calibration, the TORUSWEDGE can measure to within 1/2 percent accuracy and is repeatable to the same degree. The unit complies with API 22.2 for liquid custody transfer.
Numerous Flow Measurement Applications
Acids, gases, corrosive slurries, petrochemicals, etc. can take a heavy toll on many primary devices, but the TW has proven the phrase, “IMPOSSIBLE MEASUREMENT MADE POSSIBLE.”
