Biofuels can potentially make huge cuts in the amount of CO2 emissions released into the atmosphere, Britain's transport minister has claimed.

Sadiq Khan said the development of such energy sources can lead to "significant carbon reductions", adding that it is now important to isolate the most advantageous options.

According to Mr Khan, this is why the government is "leading the way" in funding studies that explore the benefits of alternative energy choices.

"Research like this, which we are funding with £3.8 million over two years, will enable us to get the best possible carbon savings out of biofuels," he remarked.

The government is committed to developing more environmentally-friendly transport fuels, the politician explained, which is dependent on concentrated investment.

It follows a recent Associated Press article that predicted aeroplanes could be largely run on biofuels within the next ten years, based on statements made by aviation experts that test flights showed promising results.
