A Micro GC without Micro GC Limitations

Nov 13 2014

At Falcon Analytical (USA) they understand why some have been reluctant to consider micro GCs for their operations. Many previous micro GC designs just aren't ready for big time applications. These early micros are fragile, suited only to gases and limited in application range. They often have memory and matrix issues. They are costly and complicated to maintain and repair. Then Falcon Analytical created the Calidus Gas Chromatograph -- an ultrafast, ultra-user-friendly micro GC with the durability, versatility, utility, reliability and economy it takes to go beyond the lab, out into the process plant, to the pipeline, the terminal and the greater environment.

With its sturdy, 1/8" gauge aluminum housing, the Calidus GC is tough enough for virtually any application, anywhere. Combine the Calidus’s tough exterior with its light weight, only 25lbs., and small footprint, just over 1 sq. ft. - then you have a GC that is truly portable, practical and space-saving -- In-Lab, On-Line, At-Line and In the Field. And when you deploy the Calidus GC in any of these applications it works at blinding speed, with analytical cycles 10 to 50 times faster than traditional GCs.

Calidus works smart too. Using modern computing and standard operating systems, with ChromperfectTM process control and InfoMetrix LineUpTM software built right in, the data processing and reporting issues that plagued previous micro GCs are virtually eliminated.

The Calidus GC has a very broad range. Gas or liquid samples. Fixed gases and hydrocarbons up to C44. Petroleum products and biodiesel formulations up to C50. Rotary sample valve or syringe. Built with Fast Temperature Programmable Columns and FID, TCD, DBD, or FPD detectors. Calidus is the only micro GC capable of analysing complex liquid matrixes and its methods are in true conformance with published methods.

In fact, a new Ultrafast ASTM SIMDIS Method, employed by the Calidus GC, was officially passed by the ASTM D02 committee in December 2012. This proposed D-2887 equivalent method has now been published under its own number: ASTM D-7798. This new D-7798 Method that has delivered simulated distillation for fuels characterisations in just 84 Seconds. That is 6 times faster than the existing ASTM D-2887 accelerated method. The D-7798 method has progressed to inter-lab study.

Providing further evidence of the unique capability of the Calidus GC, the United States Patent and Trademark Office has allowed two new patents for the Calidus design.

The first patent for the Calidus "Trans-Configurable Modular Chromatographic Assembly" was issued in December, 2012. The second patent for the Calidus “Fast Micro Gas Chromatograph System” was allowed in January of 2013. These patents absolutely affirm that the resistively heated stainless capillary columns and the modularity concept of Calidus gas chromatograph systems are unique and only available from Falcon Analytical. Central to the patent invention, is the modular design of the key components of chromatography – the sample processing module, column modules and detector modules. These plug and play modules can be mixed and matched to achieve the chromatographic application of interest and enable instrument to instrument reproducibility never before achieved.

The Calidus GC offers all these extraordinary benefits and yet it is simple and economical to operate and maintain, with its modular columns and detectors, drastically reduced switching valves compared to traditional GCs, and system integrity checking routines programmed on-board.
