Approved Pour Point Test Method for Petroleum Products

Sep 21 2012

Under ASTM supervision, a recent Interlaboratory Study Program (ILS) has demonstrated a correlation between No-Flow Point and Pour Point analysis for petroleum products. Due to this, ASTM integrated pour point determination into the ASTM D7346 standard test method. ASTM D7346 also includes no-flow point, which is described by this method as the temperature at which the fluid does not flow anymore due to high paraffin content or increase in viscosity.

With the ASTM D7346 now including the pour point test method, the ISL MPP 5Gs is now in full compliance with ASTM D7346 & D7689 standards. The ISL MPP 5Gs is the only analyser on the market that can determine cloud, pour, and no-flow point of petroleum products.
In addition, it has several advantages over conventional cold flow analysis systems. It runs analysis three times faster than conventional systems. It also requires little operator training since it is easy to use; operators simply fill the test tube with the sample and push the start button. It increases lab productivity by running up to 10 samples with minimal attendance due to the built-in sample changer. It also reduces product waste since it uses a smaller amount of sample, only 0.5 ml.

“With the global industry shift from gasoline towards diesel fuels, cold flow properties are increasingly crucial to perform and are needed more frequently. CFPP, Cloud & Pour point, are the current specification test methods used for predicting fuels flow behavior at low temperatures,” says Sandra Chirk, PAC Product Manager.

“However, a fourth critical property to determine is the No-Flow Point. At PAC, we understood the importance of all these analyses and developed an instrument that allows laboratories to run cloud, pour, and no-flow point simultaneously to increase lab productivity while also maintaining compliance with international standards.”
